How Do I Know My Login And Password To Connect To My OVH Windows VPS?

When first installing (or even reinstalling) a Windows OS, a user with administrator permissions is created and you’re sent an email containing the login and password. The username is usually tied to the operating system, for example, “Linux” or “Windows” in this case. If you don’t have access to your login and password, it’s still possible to access your Windows user account by resetting it.

Logging Into Your VPS via SSH (with username and password)

The main requirements for logging in include:

  • A VPS on your OVHcloud account
  • Access to your OVHcloud Control Panel
  • Your login and password (from email)

First, you’ll need to log in to your OVHcloud Control Panel, then navigate to the Bare Metal Cloud section. Here, you’ll select your server from the list on the left side, under VPS. Depending on whether your VPS is recent or older, your VPS may appear differently.

Recent/Current VPS Range

To connect via SSH on Windows, you’ll need to access your server through third-party software, such as PuTTy. In PuTTy, all you’ll need to do is open the application, then insert the hostname or IPv4 address to connect. Here is where you’ll also input the username and password. Once finished, you can enter the command-line interface.

In the terminal, you’ll need to type the following command to log into your VPS. You’ll be using the same credentials as before:

  • ssh username@IPv4_of_your_VPS

Logging in with root privileges (a sudo user) grants you access to perform administrative tasks. It’s best to first change your password using this set of commands. Note, passwords will not be displayed as you type them.

  • ~$ sudo passwd
    • New password:
    • Retype new password:
  • passwd: password updated successfully

Next, you’ll switch to the “root” user and set an admin password:

  • ~$ sudo su -
  • ~# passwd
    • New password:
    • Retype new password:
  • passwd: password updated successfully

Installing (Reinstalling) Your Recent VPS

If necessary, you can handle any reinstallations directly from your Control Panel. In the “Home” tab, search for “OS/Distribution” under Your VPS. Clicking on the ellipses (...) gives you the option of reinstalling.

You’ll see a popup window that will ask you to select:

  • Your choice operating system
  • An SSH key to pre-install (optional)

Once confirmed, you can monitor the progress of your reinstallation in the Control Panel. Installation can take at least 30 minutes to complete.

Older VPS Range

Connecting to your VPS also requires the use of PuTTy or any other third-party software. All you’ll need to do is open the application and enter the hostname or IPv4 address to connect. It’ll also require your username and password before entering the command-line interface.

Once you’re in the terminal, you’ll need to type the following command to log in. Make sure to replace the text after the @ symbol with the required information (your IPv4 address or VPS reference name):

  • ssh root@IPv4_of_your_VPS
  • ssh root@your_VPS_reference_name


Installing (Reinstalling) Your Older VPS

Much like recent VPSs, you can also handle any reinstallations directly from your Control Panel. First, under the “Home” tab, you’ll click Reinstall my VPS.

In the following pop-up window, you’ll be asked to choose:

  • Your choice of operating system
  • The language of your OS
  • An SSH key to pre-install (optional)

How Do I Reset My Password On My OVH Windows VPS?

For some, you may lose track of your password or forget it altogether. The following steps will guide you to reset your Windows user account password and log into your VPS once more.

The main requirement for resetting your Windows password is for your VPS to be in rescue mode.

Activating Rescue Mode on a VPS

Rescue mode is a tool provided by OVHcloud that allows you to diagnose network problems, fix a software firewall misconfiguration, or even repair a broken OS. In this case, all you’ll need is to reset your root password. Additionally, the steps you’ll take differ for recent VPS ranges and older ones.

Reboot Into Rescue Mode (Recent VPS Ranges)

To reboot your VPS in rescue mode, you’ll need:

  • Access to your OVHcloud Control Panel
  • An already established OVHcloud VPS service

First, you’ll return to your OVHcloud Control Panel and, under the Bare Metal Cloud section, you’ll select your server. On the “Home” tab, click the “...” next to Boot. You’ll be given the option to reboot normally or reboot into rescue mode.

Reboot Into Rescue Mode (Older VPS Ranges)

In the “Home” tab, there will be a list of shortcuts available to you. Simply click on the link titled “Reboot in rescue mode.” You’ll receive a confirmation window. Click the checkbox Reboot in rescue mode, then “Confirm.”

Once initiated, you can monitor the progress of your reboot by the progress bar. It may take up to several minutes. You’ll also receive an automated email with SSH credentials for rescue mode access, as well as being available through your OVHcloud Control Panel. Click on the name associated with your Customer ID, then select “Service emails.”

From this point, you can now connect via SSH to your VPS in rescue mode.

Resetting Your Windows Password

Once connected to your VPS, you’ll need to type the following commands to mount the remote file system:

  • ntfsfix /dev/sdb2
  • mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb2 /mnt

Then, to start the password reset process:

  • cd /mnt/Windows/System32/config
  • chntpw -l SAM

You’ll then be shown a list of users. Note which is the administrator account (or, whichever you want to change the password for) Also note that commands are case-sensitive.

  • chntpw -u Administrator SAM

If you need to re-enter the password, first type “1” then press “Enter” to clear. Pressing “q” backs out of the password change prompt. Once fully confirmed, press “y” to write changes to the file.

After this, you can leave rescue mode and reboot normally.

Inputting A New Password

When logging into your Windows VPS, you won’t be prompted to enter a password to log in. Instead, once logged into your session, press “Ctrl + Alt + Delete”, then click “Change a password.”

Here, you’ll only need to type your new password twice and leave the old password field blank.
