KVM (for Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is a full virtualization solution for Linux on x86 hardware containing virtualization extensions (Intel VT or AMD-V). It consists of a loadable kernel module, kvm.ko, that provides the core virtualization infrastructure and a processor specific module, kvm-intel.ko or kvm-amd.ko.
Using KVM, one can run multiple virtual machines running unmodified Linux or Windows images. Each virtual machine has private virtualized hardware: a network card, disk, graphics adapter, etc.
KVM is open-source software. The kernel component of KVM is included in mainline Linux, as of 2.6.20. The userspace component of KVM is included in mainline QEMU, as of 1.3.
Short for keyboard, video, and mouse switch, a KVM switch enables you to share a single keyboard, mouse, and monitor between multiple computers. KVM switches make for a cleaner environment and enables someone who needs access to multiple computers, but not all at the same time, to have an easy solution.
For a KVM switch to work, you must also have additional cables for each computer you want to connect to the KVM switch. These cables are usually a separate purchase from the main KVM switch. To set up the KVM switch, connect a single keyboard, mouse, and monitor to the KVM switch. Then, use the extra cables to connect each of the computers to the KVM switch.

KVM is very similar to Qemu and it is possible to run machines from the command line.
The basic syntax is:
- kvm -m 512 -hda disk.img -cdrom ubuntu.iso -boot d -smp 2
- -m = memory (in MB)
- -hda = first hard drive
- You can use a number of image file types including; .img, .cow
- You can also boot a hard drive. Be careful with this option as you do not want to boot the host root partition
- Syntax -hda /dev/sda
- This will call your grub menu from your MBR when you boot kvm.

An embedded VNC and SPICE client viewer presents a full graphical console to the guest domain. virt-install is a command line tool which provides an easy way to provision operating systems into virtual machines.
virt-viewer is a lightweight UI interface for interacting with the graphical display of virtualized guest OS. It can display VNC or SPICE, and uses libvirt to lookup the graphical connection details.
virt-clone is a command line tool for cloning existing inactive guests. It copies the disk images, and defines a config with new name, UUID and MAC address pointing to the copied disks.
