KVM-VPM HOSTING WE OFFER A WIDE RANGE OF VIRTUAL SERVICES
KVM (for Kernel-based Virtual Machine) is a full virtualization solution for Linux on x86 hardware containing virtualization extensions (Intel VT or AMD-V). It consists of a loadable kernel module, kvm.ko, that provides the core virtualization infrastructure and a processor specific module, kvm-intel.ko or kvm-amd.ko.
Using KVM, one can run multiple virtual machines running unmodified Linux or Windows images. Each virtual machine has private virtualized hardware: a network card, disk, graphics adapter, etc.
KVM is open-source software. The kernel component of KVM is included in mainline Linux, as of 2.6.20. The userspace component of KVM is included in mainline QEMU, as of 1.3.
Short for keyboard, video, and mouse switch, a KVM switch enables you to share a single keyboard, mouse, and monitor between multiple computers. KVM switches make for a cleaner environment and enables someone who needs access to multiple computers, but not all at the same time, to have an easy solution.
For a KVM switch to work, you must also have additional cables for each computer you want to connect to the KVM switch. These cables are usually a separate purchase from the main KVM switch. To set up the KVM switch, connect a single keyboard, mouse, and monitor to the KVM switch. Then, use the extra cables to connect each of the computers to the KVM switch.
After connecting everything together, a button on the front of the KVM switch changes between each of the computers. You may also press a combination of keys on the keyboard to switch computers.
Virtualization has been an integral part of the corporate world and professional server operations for a long time. Multiple virtual guest systems can be operated on a single physical computer. This has some important advantages:
- Systems can be neatly separated by task without requiring additional hardware (e.g. mail servers, file servers, and application servers).
- A guest system can be backed up (also referred to as “frozen”) and recovered at the push of a button.
- It is possible to migrate to new hardware very quickly.
- The guest systems can be scaled as needed which allows for flexible reactions to peak loads.
- A single hardware platform is provided for all guest systems. Driver conflicts are eliminated at the outset.
- While the open-source operating system Linux can seem rather exotic for desktop computers and private users, it has long been considered mainstream for servers. It, therefore, plays an important role as a platform for virtualization.
While the rest of this documentation focuses on using KVM through libvirt, it is also possible to work with KVM directly. This is not the recommended way due to it being cumbersome but can be very useful at times.
KVM is very similar to Qemu and it is possible to run machines from the command line.
The basic syntax is:
- kvm -m 512 -hda disk.img -cdrom ubuntu.iso -boot d -smp 2
- -m = memory (in MB)
- -hda = first hard drive
- You can use a number of image file types including; .img, .cow
- You can also boot a hard drive. Be careful with this option as you do not want to boot the host root partition
- Syntax -hda /dev/sda
- This will call your grub menu from your MBR when you boot kvm.
KVM hypervisor is the virtualization layer in Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), a free, open source virtualization architecture for Linux distributions.
A hypervisor is a program that allows multiple operating systems to share a single hardware host. In KVM, the Linux kernel acts as a Type 2 Hypervisor, streamlining management and improving performance in virtualized environments. The hypervisor creates virtual machine (VM) environments and coordinates calls for processor, memory, hard disk, network, and other resources through the host OS. KVM requires a processor with hardware virtualization extensions to connect to the guest OSs.
KVM has been bundled along with the Linux operating system (OS) since 2007 and can be installed along with the Linux kernel.
Numerous guest OSs can work with KVM including BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution), Solaris, Windows, Haiku, ReactOS, Plan 9, and the AROS Research OS. In addition, a modified version of QEMU ("Quick Emulator") can use KVM to run Mac OS X.
The virt-manager application is a desktop user interface for managing virtual machines through libvirt. It primarily targets KVM VMs, but also manages Xen and LXC (linux containers). It presents a summary view of running domains, their live performance & resource utilization statistics. Wizards enable the creation of new domains, and configuration & adjustment of a domain’s resource allocation & virtual hardware. An embedded VNC and SPICE client viewer presents a full graphical console to the guest domain. virt-install is a command line tool which provides an easy way to provision operating systems into virtual machines.
virt-viewer is a lightweight UI interface for interacting with the graphical display of virtualized guest OS. It can display VNC or SPICE, and uses libvirt to lookup the graphical connection details.
virt-clone is a command line tool for cloning existing inactive guests. It copies the disk images, and defines a config with new name, UUID and MAC address pointing to the copied disks.
There are many useful features and advantages which you will gain when you use KVM to deploy your virtual platform. KVM hypervisor supports following features:
- Over-committing: Which means allocating more virtualized CPUs or memory than the available resources on the system.
- Thin provisioning: Which allows the allocation of flexible storage and optimizes the available space for every guest virtual machine.
- Disk I/O throttling: Provides the ability to set a limit on disk I/O requests sent from virtual machines to the host machine.
- Automatic NUMA balancing: Improves the performance of applications running on NUMA hardware systems.
- Virtual CPU hot add capability: Provides the ability to increase processing power as needed on running virtual machines, without downtime.
Now, you have the minimum requirement to deploy virtual platform on your host, but we also still have useful tools to administrate our platform such as:
- virt-manager provides a GUI tool to administrate your virtual machines.
- The qemu package (quick emulator) is an application that allows you to perform hardware virtualization.
- The qemu-kvm package is the main KVM package.
- The libvritd-daemon is the virtualization daemon.
The bridge-utils package helps you create a bridge connection to allow other users to access a virtual machine other than the host system.
The virt-manager is an application for managing virtual machines through a graphical user interface.
Before proceeding further, we need to confirm that the virtualization daemon – libvritd-daemon – is running. To do so, execute the command.
